LASER training

LASER clinics

To take out one of our lasers, you will need to be a club member and to pass a laser clinic. The clinic is also for Byte, a boat similar to the Laser but more appropriate for lighter/shorter members. If you wish to enroll in the clinic on a Byte, please email education@sailtoronto.com.

To enroll in a laser clinic, you will need to have obtained your CANSail 1&2.

Training is conducted on our lasers dinghies. Laser Clinics last 5 sessions (2.5 days) and are held generally over two weekends. Here is a typical program:

  • Thursday (No sailing): Rigging class on lasers
  • Saturday: Docking, casting off (leaving the dock), basic sailing techniques, capsize recovery.
  • Sunday: Advanced techniques and intro to racing.

To pass the clinic, you will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Basic sailboat and sailing knowledge
  • Departing and returning to our docks
  • Tacking and gybing
  • Good sail trim on all points of sail
  • Capsize recovery

It is possible to old salt your laser clinic if you have substantive experience sailing lasers.
