Mid Winter Events .. Update

As the bountiful supply of pictures in the Whisper Pole will testify, while most Torontonians hibernate, Jtowners do not. Last fall saw a flurry of activity as our new House Chair Nigel Rigby organized a work party to relocate the front gate and outhouse (see pics in left column). This creates more efficient organization of the backyard and creates space for private boats. (More on the private boat policy in the next issue of the Whisper Pole).

The Christmas Party was well attended and it was a good thing too. Due to an 'almost resolved' insurance issue the club had disconnected the woodstove. Seasonally warmed hearts and bodys took the chill out of the club house along with borrowed electric and propane heaters. Many thanks to Social Chairs Jean-Paul Buread and Kirby Park and everyone who helped with food, decorations and party preparations (see pics in left column).

One brave soul appeared at the club on January 1st for the Annual Polar Bear Swim. Accolades to former Commodore Ann Richards for taking the last opportunity before this winters 'deep freeze' for a swim in the lake (see pics in left column). A small contingent of onlookers showed up to cheer, take pictures and assist in the post swim warm-up.

Close to 25 people came to the annual Skating Party for a superb skate across the Outer Harbour. Snow near the club required walking to the spit to put on skates otherwise it was clear skating (although a bit bumpy) to the Leslie St. Spit. For skating party pictures click here. Many thanks to everyone who helped with the Party, special thanks to Klinger for Klingers Chowder.

Calendar 2004 - Two Months to First Sail!

Although winter has been a pile of fun (snow, cold .. whatever), it is only two short months before sailing begins. This weekend the club put the finishing touches on the 2004 calander now posted to the website .. click here for the Calendar.

Beginning in April, a month before sailing, work parties get underway to prepare the club for another season . House chair, Nigel Rigby and Fleet Chair, Paul Chandler both have pre-season special projects .. read their articles for the details.

Message from the House Chair

Hopefully we are through the worst of the cold and shoveling although the skiing and winter activities have been great.

It won't be long before the sailing season is upon us. As a result, I will be looking for willing volunteers for such tasks as:

- Dock repair & docks in, plus general site and building clean-up tentatively scheduled for Saturday April 17th with a back-up date of Sunday the 18th.

- The dividing of the sail lockers in half to facilitate use by members for personal sailing gear. The "Fleet Chair" (Paul Chandler) will be modifying the sail storage building to accommodate all three sets of sails and equipment including rudders, tillers and whisker poles.

- The building of a ramp at waters edge for our Hobie Cat.

- The repair of the sun awning over the front entranceway. Over time the existing one has sustained extensive weather damage.

- Weather permitting, the deck and deck furniture require another coat of stain.

I am sure that we have all noticed that our general tool supply, kept in "Klingers Cottage" has become depleted. With budgetary constraints in mind, I hope to gradually upgrade and augment our basic tools; pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, files, saws, and so on.

I look forward to your assistance plus any comments or suggestions that you might have to make your Club a more enjoyable experience.

Message from the Fleet Chair

Hello All,

First to all the boat captains: I would like to thank all of you for continuing to volunteer some of your time to oversee one of the club boats. It can be a time consuming and frustrating task at times but without you the club probably couldn't function so again thank you.

We touched bases at the back end of last year regarding repairs and an
equipment inventory to the boats. If you are aware of anything that has to be purchased (New sheets, poles...) to bring the boat up to par, or any other issues will you please let me know well before the sailing season as this is something that I would prefer to deal with now. If we spoke last year then please send the details again, I want to make sure nothing is missed.

Secondly - 505's: It is very likely we will be running the successful bronze-5 clinics again this year which also means the boats are going to get used. I am asking if any of you might be interested in taking on a 505 as boat captain with the usual privileges. If you are then please call me. If you are a bronze 4 sailor unfamiliar with spinnaker and trapeze but thinking of taking the challenging bronze 5 course, then perhaps this may interest you.

Sails and boats: The fourteen new sets of Albacore sails that were ordered back in December should hopefully be ready for delivery and measurement in April which means we will have them for the start of the season. We also have a few thousand dollars from fleet replacement dedicated to the 505's for much needed repair and upgrade.

Power boats - Both new power boats are currently having warranty issues dealt with, and thank you Mark Spur (Our power boat captain) for organizing this.

Last thing -- I am looking for volunteers to help reorganize the sail
locker on one or two of the work parties in April. If you have time and can help I would be grateful. Please call or email, coffee and edible stuff I believe is on the house.

Thanks and all the best

Message from the Race Chair

We are very fortunate that Toronto offers Albacore sailors the opportunity to participate in many well-run regattas and compete against many high caliber Albacore racers. Racing is a great way to hone your sailing skills and improve your general knowledge of sailing, but most of all it’s a great way to have fun.

A terrific way to get involved are our weekly race training nights (usually Mondays). These advanced sail training sessions afford the opportunity to polish your starts and brush up on the rules as well as other aspects of racing. Please see the calendar for this year’s schedule and be sure to come out.

I’d also like to challenge each and every Jtown member to spend at least one of your Friday nights or weekend this summer, helping to organize or run a race event. Your participation in a race event will give you a new appreciation for what goes on behind the scenes. You’ll also learn how to set and maintain start/finish lines and marks, hone your compass skills and wind reading ability, learn some theory and the racing rules. Every race committee needs Recorders, Timers, Flag Officers, Sound Signalers, and Line Judges, so please volunteer by signing up on the Race Board in the clubhouse for a race event this summer.

For members who are keen to get involved in racing, consider taking the Race Management Seminar offered by the Ontario Sailing Association on March 20 and 21 at the National Yacht Club. For registration information please see the OSA web site at http://www.sailon.org

Now I know that it’s only February and you’re probably skiing most weekends but really it’s not too soon to start thinking about racing. For those lucky ones who can make it, the Midwinter Regatta is scheduled for March 19 to 21 in Sarasota, Florida. Check the CAA website for details, crewing positions are available, so book a flight!

Closer to home, the CAA is offering a 2 day race training clinic on May 29 & 30 taught by Richard Clarke. This is an advanced race training program that will have criteria established for who can participate. More details of this event will follow.

This year I’d like to see more people involved with racing at Jtown and I’m going to do my best to encourage everyone, including those budding Laser racers (I think you know who you are).

Keep in mind that there are only 8 more weeks until the sailing season begins.

Message from Communication Chair

In 2004, Jtown is shifting publication of the Whisper Pole from print to the web. Of the 190 members of the club there are about 10 who do not have a personal email address. Of the 10 who don't have email addresses, most have regular access to an email account and the internet. Under these circumstances, it was a matter of 'when', 'not if' the change would occur, so how about now!

A benefit of web publishing will be that Jtown can send more frequent issues of the Whisper Pole. Once sailing season is underway we plan one issue a week to be sent out Sunday evenings. All issues of the Whisper Pole will be posted to the website so that if you miss an email message you can read it there.

The Communications Committee is looking for volunteers to:

- update the website
- prepare and email Whisper Poles
- maintain the bulletin boards at the sailing club
- become photo editor for the club

If a one or all of these positions interests you please email news@sailtoronto.com.

Next issue of the Whisper Pole will have membership information (the new fees and application form), a 2004 recruitment poster, update on the 2004 education program and other news.

If you wish to contribute articles, pictures, jokes, stories .. or whatever to the Whisper Pole please feel free to forward them to news@sailtoronto.com.

Here's looking forward to spring!
